Library News to Know

It’s time to get out in those gardens, so we have some good tips for you this week; as well as some virtual tours of vacation hotspots. What else is growing? A plan for our phased reopening! Details are in the letter below.

To our Library Family:

As the state begins to slowly open up, we are putting our own policies and procedures in place to allow for a safe resumption of services. “Safe” is the operating word – our biggest concern is the health and well-being of our staff and patrons, and that is driving our steps forward.

Since things may change in an instant, none of our current plans are set in stone. BUT, we’re excited to share with you what we envision as part of our phased reopening.

We’ll start by opening the book drop on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., beginning May 16. To prevent an avalanche, we’re asking that only people whose last names begin with A-L use the drop box that day. Those with last names beginning with M-Z can drop off books on May 23. After that, the book drop will be open for all every Saturday.

Then we’ll move to no-contact porch service – yay, you can get some books again! You’ll be able to email or call in your requests, and if you can’t navigate our online catalog, we’ll be happy to create bundles for you based on the reading material you like.

After that, we’ll probably take appointments for people to come in. The next step is opening with social distancing observed. Please be aware that we will require anyone in the library to wear a face mask. Don’t worry – if you don’t have one, we’ll supply you!

And “Imagine Your Story” for the summer will probably be heavily virtual, but it won’t be missing the fun component! Children from K-6 will be able to register soon.

All of these plans rely on availability of disinfecting supplies and PPE, federal/state guidelines for employees and the public, what the Town departments are doing, and a long string of other considerations.

But for now, remember, our digital branch is open for you 24/7. And, our cheerful staff is here to help you remotely! Can’t find your card number and want to download an e-book? New to the library and need a temporary card to access OverDrive? No problem! Email us at newdurhamlibrary@gmail.com and we’ll take care of you. Everything downloadable is available through our website, newdurhamlibrary.org

OverDrive now offers, in addition to its ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines, direct access to Ancestry.com. The other family research site HeritageQuest is also available to patrons for a limited time for free from their home computers. Please email us for login information.

If internet access is sketchy from your home, feel free to use the WiFi available in our parking lot; the user name is Library and the password is Everglades. We will keep you in the know every way we can! We can be reached at newdurhamlibrary@gmail.com seven days a week. Phone messages left at 859-2201 will be answered periodically.

Everyone stay well!

Coming soon on Facebook Live and the library’s YouTube channel is “Illustrious Tales” for kids in K-4. We’ll present fun legends and folklore, but we need your help! Send in your drawings and we’ll use them in the stories.
This is what we need: a mule, a boy, a man sitting, a man running, a dog running, a dog sitting, two cats, a rat, a rat lying in bed, and a tiny drum. The illustrations should be from three to six inches tall, and in color, if possible. Draw just one or several!

The first story we'll be doing needs the first six things in the list (up to the two cats). The deadline for those illustrations is May 18. The rest of the list will be part of the second story - that deadline is May 25.

Scan your work and email it to us at newdurhamlibrary@gmail.com or mail it in to the library at 2 Old Bay Road.

Exercising together doubles as quality time! Grab some pieces of paper and write instructions down:
  • 5 jumping jacks, hop on one foot 10 times,
  • hug the person on your left,
  • jump as high as you can 5 times,
  • run in place for 15 seconds, do 5 pushups
– you get the idea.

If you have very young ones playing, write a letter they can recognize, rather than the instructions, and have a “key” – “A” means do 5 jumping jacks, “B” means hop on one foot 10 times, etc.

Now, put the papers on the floor upside down in a circle. Turn on the music and dance around the circle. When the music stops, everyone is in front of a paper (like Musical Chairs, only no piece of paper is taken away). Flip over the paper and do what it tells you. Keep going! Get those heart rates up!

Add some activity to schoolwork:
  • Do a hula dance while reciting the multiplication tables.
  • Practice spelling by doing a jumping jack for each letter.
  • While practicing math problems, do a squat every time the answer is an even number.
Jazz up your family walks by turning it into a sport:
  • Do jumping jacks at the telephone pole,
  • run around the shrub at the corner,
  • sprint from the yellow house to the brown house,
  • hop 10 times if you neighbor’s cat is in the window, etc.
Disco is not dead!

Select one evening a week and fill the house with dance tunes. If you don’t have a strobe light, let the kids take turns using as flashlight as one.

Family Gardening

Get the entire family involved in gardening – it’s good exercise and kids are more apt to eat what they grow.
And while you’re outside: We’ve all done leaf rubbings with crayon – how about trying bark rubbings for an unusual background for a drawing?
