Solid Waste Facility - Transfer Station Labor and Disposal Savings

February 8, 2010

Dear Residents of New Durham:

The Town of New Durham is in need of your assistance with our efforts to reduce the cost for the disposal of solid waste and recyclable materials. An assessment of the current operations and handling of waste and recycled items was conducted by third party professionals. A number of labor and disposal cost savings have been proposed, as methods for achieving an increase with participation in the mandatory recycling program and reducing the amount of solid waste hauls. Implementation of these recommendations requires the support and commitment of all who use the Solid Waste/Transfer Facility.

Beginning February 8, 2010, the following changes will be in effect:

Residents will dispose of the following recycled items, tin, glass, plastic, aluminum beverage cans and recycled paper, directly into designated roll-off containers. Please consider pre-sorting these items before arriving at the facility. This will allow for an efficient flow of traffic.

Please note: If material is not listed as an “acceptable material” do not dispose in roll-off containers, seek assistance from attendant.

  • Tin, Acceptable materials: All steel food cans and pet food cans. Hint: Rinse cans, labels do not need to be removed, flatten cans to maximize space.
  • Glass, Acceptable materials: Any color glass beverage container, remove caps; any color glass food container, remove covers; and window panes, mirrors.

Asphalt shingles shall be separated from construction debris and disposed of in the designated area at the facility. The shingles shall be free of all wood and paper materials.

Contractors, businesses and home remodeling generating more than 4 cubic yards of Construction & Demolition Debris or Sheetrock and Shingles shall use a waste removal service to dispose of their materials. This is equal to two, eight foot pickup trucks beds, filled level to the manufactures bed height. Seek assistance from attendant. Please see "Construction Waste" web page for details.

All other recyclable items will be disposed of at the facility as usual.

All other restrictions and fees remain in effect to dispose of shingles; and sheetrock and demolition/construction debris will not change, at this time.

Should you have any question, please contact one of the attendants, or call 859-8080.

Thank you for your support with the efforts to reduce the cost to dispose of your waste.
